A New Era for Oakland Filmmakers:

Mayor Sheng Thao’s Commits to Leveling Up Oakland’s Film industry.

In her State of the City address on Tuesday, Mayor Sheng Thao outlined her plan to bolster Oakland’s commercial centers and bring struggling local businesses and industries prosperity. A key component of this proposal is encouraging the growth of Oakland’s film industry.


“Im excited to announce a bold new initiative to center Film and Television production as a cornerstone of my administration’s economic Development plan.”


Mama Dog Studios Owner, Pilar Zuniga, attended the meeting with other members of the East Bay Film Collective who have been fighting to shoot their projects in the Bay Area ever since the beginning of their careers. Some of these local filmmakers had the the fortune of being mentioned in Mayor Sheng Thao’s speech.


“To make sure we are doing this right my administration has been working in consultation with filmmakers who are from or nurtured by Oakland - from award-winners like W. Kamau Bell, Pete Nicks, Rafael Casal and the Cinemama Crew to Oakland-based cultural leaders like Favianna RodriguezCenter for Cultural Power and Community Organizers like Pastor Michael McBride and Live Free
